The Dorsett – Hotel Review from Hong Kong

Hong Kong is not the cheapest place to travel to, especially not during Lunar New Year. Ried and I wanted to stay somewhere not too crazy expensive but also didn’t want to be a million miles from major sites. In the end, we decided on the Dorsett Hotel in Wan Chai on Hong Kong Island. If you are wondering where to stay in Hong Kong continue reading to see why we chose this hotel, and would we choose it again.

After doing a lot of research on what area was best to stay in, we decided on Hong Kong Island. There are some major sites on the island (Victoria’s Peak, The Dragon’s Back hike, Central, the world’s largest outdoor escalators, etc.) and is also the place to stay for nightlife. Lucky for us, metro in Hong Kong is amazing so getting over the water to Tsim Sha Tsui and Kowloon for a day was super easy. Dorsett is about a ten minute walk from Wan Chai Station which can get you anywhere you want to go in Hong Kong. The hotel is also a pretty close walk to Causeway Bay which is an area I really enjoyed checking out, but wouldn’t have thought to spend much time at if we had not been close by. Also, the Dorsett is right by the Happy Valley Racecourse so if you are into that, you are only about a 5 minute walk away from getting inside. So location was a win!

Our room was on the small side but definitely larger than I expected considering where we were. There was enough room to put both our bags on the floor while open. There was a safe, a refrigerator, and some complimentary fruit. The bathroom was quite a bit larger than anticipated which a decent sized shower. We had a nice view of the city from our window as well. Overall the rooms weren’t anything crazy special, but were comfortable and served our purposes just fine.

The hotel wifi met all of our needs and was never disappointing. The rooms also featured a complimentary cell phone which could be used while wandering the streets and could be used as a portable wifi hotspot while exploring.

Hotel Extras

Check-in and checkout went quickly and smoothly. The staff were friendly but not overbearing. The elevators were ridiculously slow (I usually think that this is a stupid thing to complain about but I have never been on an elevator that took as long as this one so it was worth noting) but was really only a minor inconvenience. On the bright side, while you are stuck on the elevator, there is some awesome festive music playing on loop that reminded me of the Kung Fu Panda soundtrack. You will come to either love or hate the 30 second loop during your time here!

Overall Impression

I would recommend this hotel to anyone that doesn’t want to splurge on a crazy expensive hotel but still wants ease of access to the sites. The hotel was clean and comfortable and I would stay here again!
