Ascott Raffles Place Singapore: Where to Stay in Singapore

When visiting Singapore during Lunar New Year, be aware that hotel prices are much higher than other times of year. We couldn’t justify $700 a night to stay at the Marina Bay Sands which will need to stay on our bucket list awhile longer, but we wanted to stay somewhere relatively close to Gardens by the Bay. Comparing hotels and prices we ended up settling on Ascott Raffles Place Singapore (certainly not to be confused with Raffles Hotel).

Ascott Raffles Place Singapore is in a great location. It is located only a short walk from notable sights such as Raffles Hotel, Marina Bay, and is only 1.6 km from Gardens by the Bay. There are many food options within a 5 minute walk including some hawker centers. The hotel is located in a commercial district and is close to various forms of transit. As far as location is concerned, we were exceptionally happy.

Check In

Our check in was straightforward and simple. Having come directly from the Grand Hyatt Kuala Lumpur, we noticed a significant difference in service which is to be expected after staying in a 5 star hotel. We had no complaints in this regard, however, it is still not a cheap stay some visitors may be disappointed if they expect to be shown to their room or any service beyond check in and room cleaning. However, if you appreciate privacy and being able to carry your own bags, this can be quite welcome.

The Room

Before going into much detail about the room, I’ll address something that was incredibly disappointing. Our room had small windows which faced directly at a brick wall a few meters away. This would not have been an issue for us except that there was no indication that this would be the case when booking the hotel. We were never promised a view but we did feel a bit deceived when we arrived in our room. Pictures online were taken in a way that may make you expect a larger window. Furthermore, having paid $270 a night for a view of a brick wall felt a bit overpriced.

All of this said however, the room was quite nice. Some of the furniture was showing signs of wear but overall was well maintained and clean. Our room had a kitchenette and was very large. We had all the amenities we needed. The bed was comfortable and large and the room was quiet. The washroom was also large and comfortable. Apart from the view we were pleased with our stay.

This hotel is well located and offers large comfortable rooms. We were however disappointed with the view from our room. Compared to other hotels nearby Ascott Raffles Place Singapore is reasonably priced but in other countries you could probably stay at a much nicer hotel for the same price. In the future we would likely stay somewhere else for the variety but overall Ascott Raffles Place Singapore is worth a stay.
