5 Tips for Visiting Hong Kong

Hong Kong was one of my favourite places we have travelled to yet. Here are a few tips to get you started if you are planning a trip to this great location!

1. Eat in Central

Central is located on Hong Kong Island and is a great place to get some yummy eats. This is the place to go to try many of Hong Kong’s local delicacies and you won’t lack for choices of restaurants. Ho Lee Fook, Ding Dim 1968, and the Green Waffle Diner were a few of the places we checked out for meals but there were so many options we could have eaten here every day. I also highly recommend checking out Heeretea for some delicious cheese tea!

2. Get away from the main island and see some of the surrounding area.

There is so much to see in Hong Kong that it’s difficult to figure out how to spend your time. I definitely think it is worth leaving the main island though, even if you are in a time crunch! Ried and I checked out Lantau Island and saw the Big Buddha and Tai O fishing village and it was a really great experience. I wish we could have seen even more of the surrounding islands as I hear there is some great hiking and beautiful views and beaches. Let us know in the comments below if you’ve checked out any of these areas!

3. Bathrooms

Hong Kong bathrooms aren’t too tricky to figure out but the toilet paper situation might confuse you the first time you head into one. When you walk into a bathroom look for a toilet paper dispenser outside of the stalls. You grab how much you need before heading in. Pretty simple but it would suck to get caught without!

4. Get an Octopus card

The MTR system in Hong Kong is phenomenal. We used it a ton to get from place to place and it is super straightforward and easy to use. If you are going to be using it frequently, it’s worth getting an Octopus Card. We bought ours at the airport before we hopped on the train to the mainland. It’s easy to refill in most train stations (I can’t actually remember seeing a station without an electronic kiosk to refill at) and you just keep it loaded so you aren’t fumbling with tickets constantly. Then just scan your card at the gate before and after boarding your train!

5. Drink Milk Tea

Hong Kong is known for their delicious milk tea and it’s for good reason. It’s a combo of tea (usually oolong in our experience) and condensed milk and you can get it cold or warm. It is such a sweet and yummy drink that I couldn’t stop wanting more of it! Definitely try some while in Hong Kong!

I hope that some of these tips help you out and that you love your time in Hong Kong as much as I did!
